Flickr

Flickr hosts amateur and institutional photography, much of it freely available to use.
 
  • Flickr Commons allows you to search for images with no copyright restrictions.
  • Flickr also allows for searching through images with a creative commons license.  After running a search, use the limiter in the top left hand side of the screen to choose an appropriate license.

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons is a site that hosts images, audio, video and other files.
 
While Wikimedia is indexed by Google Image Search, it is faster to search this source.  To find images that can be lawfully used, click on the media file to take you to the information for that file (see example below).  This will list information supplied by the uploaded including copyright status and license conditions.

Google Advanced Image Search

Google's Advanced Image Search allows you to filter images by license.
