Exceptions

TEACH Act (Section 110(2))

Enables the display of copyrighted materials for distance education by accredited, non-profit educational institutions that meet the Act's qualifying requirements.  It does NOT supersede Fair Use, licenses, and contractual agreements.


Library Copying (Section 108)

Permits copies of materials for preservation and security, to give copies to users for their private study or research and to send copies through document delivery or interlibrary loan.  This exception only applies to certain types of work and certain circumstances.  Example: the library can provide an article owned by another library to you for private scholarship but you cannot post this article in your virtual classroom.


Special Formats for Persons with Disabilities (Section 121)

Permits formatting of published, non-dramatic literary works differently in order to make these works useful to persons who are blind or have other disabilities. Note: students need to be registered with the Disability Services Office in order for the University to provide materials in alternative formats.


Fair Use (Section 107)

Provides instances for when using copyrighted material may be deemed fair.  See the Fair Use tab for more information.
