Library Videos: Subject Vs Keyword Searching

Subject vs Keyword Searching

Not all library databases contain keyword and subject searching options, but many do. This tutorial will explain the difference between the types of searches and how to utilize them.

What's the Difference?

Keyword Searches

  •   Keyword searches look for your terms anywhere in the record (e.g. title, abstract, subject heading author name or other notes).
  •   Keyword searches may be less precise or relevant than searches using digital tags or prescribed subject terms.

Subject Searches

  •   Subject headings are searchable. They describe and tag the content of each item in a database.
  •   Use subject heading searches to find relevant items on the same topic.

Selecting Keywords

Creating a list of keywords to search may result in more efficient searches. These, in turn, will lead to more plentiful and relevant information supporting your writing:

  •   Leave out minor words such as articles and prepositions or verb phrases.
  •   Try thinking of synonyms for keywords.
  •   Use nouns as your main keywords. Avoid verbs and use adjectives sparingly.
  •   Topics or keywords related to your selected keywords may be worthy of consideration if you want to further refine your research focus.
