AI Resources

Our goal continues to be a support for the student and their writing in the CSU Global classroom. Since the introduction of artificial intelligence in November of 2022, there has been an increase in the use of the technology in many sectors including higher education. Below you will find a number of resources to help inform you about Large Language Models (LLM) like Bard, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) copies or mirrors human traits like problem-solving and decision-making. By gathering and storing massive amounts of data, AI is able to make predictions and learn. AI has the ability to include in its learning model or algorithm, human or environmental feedback. Every time a user prompts the Large Language Model (LLM), like ChatGPT, it stores and learns from that feedback or data. It can also produce text/answers for a question or prompt by the user.

CSU Global Policy & Useful Resources

The CSU Global Writing Center is here to help students become better writers. There are a number of resources available to help students and faculty alike to better understand the power of these tools and how to use them ethically.

The link here to the video created by George Fox Digital is a short and informative video about why students use scholarly research and how to use LLM's like ChatGPT, ethically.

Remember, if you are using a tool like ChatGPT or Perplexity AI, don't post personal or confidential information. It stores that information and uses it is as part of the learning model or algorithm. Continue to use your critical thinking skills when working with one of these tools. The machine will make up information or "hallucinate." Important to note: these are tools, not sources. Never assume the answers or citations are correct. Check your sources!

If you are instructed by the professor to use AI in an assignment, there are resources to help you format the use of them in a paper.

Grammarly

Grammarly

What is Grammarly?

Grammarly is a useful AI-powered writing assistant resource used by students, professionals, and academics. In the beginning, Grammarly was primarily used for checking spelling and grammar. Today, GrammarlyGo is similar to other artificial intelligence systems, like ChatGPT. By investing millions into its natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning technologies, Grammarly can be used as a generative AI writing tool.

Students who choose to use Grammarly for help with re-writing and refining papers will "likely be flagged by our detector" in Turnitin vs students who use Grammarly as a spelling, grammar, and punctuation tool (Turnitin, 2023).

For a deeper dive into the influence Grammarly may have on AI scores, read this discussion thread on Turnitin's Educator Network where educators ask questions to find answers and hold conversations on timely topics like AI and Grammarly. Watch this short video introduction below on how Grammarly works.
