Saudi Electronic University Academic Writing Standards and APA Style Guidelines: Introduction

SEU APA Style Guide

The SEU Guide to APA Requirements defines foundational expectations and standards that foster participation in the exchange of ideas and dialog through the proper attribution and documentation of information sources. The following information is based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed.

Why Cite?

It may seem like citing your sources is tedious, but it's important and there are many reasons to do it.

Attributing and documenting your sources:

  1. Helps you avoid plagiarizing.
  2. Allows the reader to find your research sources.  Think of citations as footprints leading the reader through some of the steps you took to reach your conclusions.
  3. Provides evidence for your arguments and adds credibility to your work by demonstrating that you have sought out and considered a variety of viewpoints on a given topic.
  4. Is standard practice for scholars and students engaged in written academic conversations.  By citing your sources, you demonstrate that you are responding to this person, agreeing with that person, adding something to what so-and-so said and so forth.

Pitfalls!

Keep in mind that all citations generated on the web and through library subscription databases such as EBSCO or ProQuest may not be correct.

You can use the citations these tools generate as a starting point, but ultimately you need to proofread them and make sure they match the SEU Guide to APA Requirements in this document.
