What is a Scholarly Journal?

Scholarly journals are also called academic, peer-reviewed, or refereed journals. These journals often report original research or compile literature reviews. A scholarly journal is visibly different from other magazines and periodicals, but occasionally it can be hard to tell. Scholarly journals:

  •   Are written by experts (scholars, professors, researchers) in a given field.
  •   Contain articles that have undergone the peer review process.
  •   Often have an abstract, which is a descriptive summary of the article contents, before the main text of the article.
  •   Generally, have a serious look. They can contain many graphs and charts but rarely have glossy pages or exciting pictures.
  •   Cite their sources in the form of footnotes or bibliographies. These citations are generally lengthy and cite other scholarly writings.
