Steps for Company Research

Determine if the company is publicly owned or privately held (publicly owned companies are easier to research!). Look for annual reports in Company Reports links on the right hand side of the screen.

Create a profile of your selected company including an overview, history, sales, profits, number of employees, locations, products and services, financial data, and key competitors. Two databases for that include company profiles are listed below. If your company is not listed in these databases, you can create a profile on your own.

Find current news and in-depth articles about the company from business magazines and trade publications to gather insight into the company's operations and strategies. The following library databases are good sources of information in addition to Bloomberg, CNNMoney, Yahoo! Finance, and Google Business News.

Explore the company's website to see what it says about itself.  Keep in mind, company websites are usually see as marketing tools for the company.

Look at company financials through EDGAR's SEC filings or LexisNexis in order to determine their profitability.

Look at industry reports and competitors in the databases listed below.

Look for the Investor Relations area of their websites.
